Gold Tour Slated for South Pass

On Saturday, August 21, 2004, W. Dan Hausel of the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) will lead an all day tour of the historic South Pass gold mining district. The field trip is for the Rocky Mountain Prospectors and Treasure Hunters club, but the general public is also invited. The tour will begin at 8:00 am sharp at the Atlantic City iron ore mine turnout (overlook) along State Highway 28 just before the turnoff to Atlantic City. The turnout is about 19 miles south of the intersection of Highway 28 and U.S. 789/287, or about 28 miles south of Lander. Bring plenty of drinks, lunch, camera, and a high clearance vehicle.

Hausel, who is Senior Economic Geologist at the WSGS, spent six years in the field mapping this mining district including eight 7.5-minute quadrangles. In the process, he also mapped all of the accessible gold mines. His reports on South Pass are published by the WSGS and are the premier sources of geologic information for this district. South Pass is Wyoming's most important gold district both historically and for modern-day prospecting.

Tour participants may wish to purchase copies of two WSGS publications on South Pass, Public Information Circular (PIC) 23, an illustrated guide to the area and its geology, and Report of Investigations (RI) 44, a technical report on the geology and gold resources of the area which includes an incredibly detailed color geologic map. PIC-23 is $4.50 and RI-44 is $22.00. These and other publications are available over-the-counter at the WSGS Publications Sales Office in Laramie or by phone, fax, or Email. The WSGS now accepts Visa¨ or MasterCard¨ credit cards for purchases. Call for shipping and handling charges for your orders and include 6% sales tax for Wyoming addresses.
