New WSGS maps cover areas in seven Wyoming counties
Eleven geologic maps of different areas in seven Wyoming counties are now available from the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS). The color maps show areas in Albany, Carbon, Converse, Fremont, Platte, Sublette and Sweetwater counties.
“Two updated map series, MS-50 and MS-89, include the city of Laramie and focus on the geologic architecture of the Casper Formation, Laramie’s primary source for drinking water,” said WSGS geologist Fred McLaughlin.
“The Laramie maps will be important to city, county and state officials, water resource managers, developers, industry representatives and residents interested in land-use planning and issues relating to the Casper aquifer,” McLaughlin said.
He added that three maps include the city of Rock Springs, Firehole Canyon and Kinney Rim in Sweetwater County, two include the town of Pinedale, two encompass Lander, one includes Rawlins and one shows the Laramie Peak area in Albany, Converse and Platte counties.
“These maps will be fundamental tools for locating, describing and evaluating mineral, energy and water resources,” McLaughlin said. “They also identify geologic hazards, including fault zones, landslides and floodplains. For instance, the Pinedale maps include one of Wyoming’s most important giant gas fields, and it also defines the Continental Fault.”
All but one of the maps were prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) with funds from STATEMAP 2008, the national cooperative geologic mapping program between state geological surveys and the USGS.
The State of Wyoming – through the WSGS – contributes dollar-for-dollar matching funds for the program, currently in its 15th year.
The new maps are listed below:
- Preliminary geologic map of the Rawlins 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Carbon County, by Fred McLaughlin and Jeff Fruhwirth, Open File Report (OFR) 08-4
- Preliminary surficial geologic map of the Kinney Rim 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Sweetwater County, by Laura Hallberg and James Case, OFR 09-1
- Preliminary surficial geologic map of the Firehole Canyon 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Sweetwater County, by Laura Hallberg and James Case, OFR 09-2
- Preliminary surficial geologic map of the Laramie Peak 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Albany, Converse and Platte counties, by Laura Hallberg and James Case, OFR 09-3
- Preliminary geologic map of the Rock Springs 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Sweetwater County, by Justin Scott and Richard Jones, OFR 09-4
- Preliminary geologic map of the Pinedale 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Sublette and Fremont counties, by Justin Scott and Wayne Sutherland, OFR 09-5
- Preliminary surficial geologic map of the Pinedale 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Sublette and Fremont counties, by Seth Wittke, OFR 09-6
The updated maps include the following:
- Geologic map of the Laramie 7.5' Quadrangle, Albany County, by Alan Ver Ploeg, MS-50 (replaces an earlier version published in 1992)
- Geologic map of the Lander 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Fremont County, by Joe Johnson and Wayne Sutherland, MS-87 (replaces OFR 08-2)
- Surficial geologic map of the Lander 30' × 60' Quadrangle, Fremont County, by Seth Wittke, MS-88 (replaces OFR 08-3)
- Geologic map of the Pilot Hill 7.5' Quadrangle, Albany County, by Alan Ver Ploeg and Fred McLaughlin, MS-89 (revised from OFR 06-5)
MS-50 and MS-89 are at a scale of 1:24,000; the rest are 1:100,000.
The maps are available as rolled hard copies for $25 each and on CD for $10, plus shipping fees and applicable taxes. The CDs include printable and viewable files along with files that can be loaded into GIS software.
